Meditation is a simple, yet profound method to improve the quality of our lives.  Through following very simple, practical instructions, we can learn to let go of the causes of our pain and dissatisfaction and to gain the inner peace and clarity we seek.

Julia Strohm and Tim Cockey are senior teachers at the Chakrasambara Buddhist Center (www.meditationinnewyork.org) located in Chelsea.  They have studied for many years under the guidance of CBC’s resident teacher, Kadam Morten, himself a student for over a quarter of a century of the renowned Buddhist master, Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, founder of the New Kadampa Tradition.

These ongoing classes cover a wide range of topics, offering teachings and insights into the Buddha’s profound methods for transforming our life through meditation and contemplation.  The classes are organized into series (usually of 4 - 5 weeks duration), where the students and the instructors can delve into issues such as anger, improving our relationships, transforming conflict, working with fear, and much more.  Although taught in series, each of the classes can stand alone.  All the classes are drop-ins.  There is no need or requirement at all to commit to an entire series.

Each class begins with a guided meditation in which the instructor leads the students through a series of mental and physical relaxations and then into the particular contemplation and meditation topic of the evening’s class.  Following this meditation comes a Dharma talk, in which the students are encouraged to participate with questions and personal insights.  At the conclusion of the class, there is a closing meditation, incorporating various aspects of the preceding talk.

Most students in these classes sit in chairs.  However, for those who wish, some cushions are available.
