ROBIN DOWNES
Robin Downes is an Emmy(R) Award winning television producer, filmmaker and certified Hatha Yoga instructor since 1996. Her roots include East Indian, West Indian and Eurasian by way of the Boogie Down Bronx, New York. Because of her diverse background, Robin is sensitive to our multicultural society. Growing up in the Boogie Down allowed her to be an active participant in the Hip-Hop Generation. Robin’s professional journey from the media arts to the healing arts makes her the perfect guide into today’s rapidly expanding Yoga community.
In February 2009, Ms. Downes began
producing and hosting “Yoga Flava TV”
for African Caribbean Television (ACT)
Satellite Network. She is also producing and
hosting “A.C.T. in ACTion” - bringing
you good news, special events and celebrations.
Robin has earned the distinction of being
the first African-American female yoga instructor to have a
internationally distributed Yoga DVD through Walmart,
“Robin Downes’ Yoga Flava Volume 1: For
Relaxation.” The release of the DVD in 2004 earned her
the prestigious Yoga Trailblazer Award from the International
Association of Black Yoga Teachers (IABYT) .
Travel to India has provided Robin with
additional education and authentic organic insight into the art
of yoga. In addition, she is trained in the Kundalini Yoga
discipline. She has also studied with prominent Yoga
instructors such as Rodney Yee, Judith Lasiter, David Life and
Sharon Gannon (Jivamukti Y oga), Patricia Walden, Eric Shiffman
and the great East Indian scholar T.K.V. Desikachar.
Prior to becoming a certified Yoga
instructor, Robin was an accomplished director and producer
with an Emmy award for “Outstanding Individual
Achievement in News and Documentaries - ABC News 20/20.
From 2004 - 2008, Robin was heard
everyday on Sirius Satellite Radio’s R&B Heart and
Soul programming at 7:20am and 10:20am EST for Yoga Flava®
60-second fitness tips of the day.
Other career highlights in the media
industry include; Music Coordinator for The Cosby Show,
Production Coordinator for Spike Lee’s Do The Right
Thing, Unit Publicist for New Jack City, Producer/Director for
the PBS special Black Conservatism. Independently she wrote,
produced, and directed the short film Go For It. In 1994, Robin
moved to Hollywood and worked at Paramount pictures as a
development associate for the producers of A Clear and Present
Danger and The General’s Daughter.
Robin received a Bachelor of Arts in
Communications from Adelphi University and was a music major at
the prestigious High School of Music and Art in her hometown of
New York City.
